How people dress for work is very important, whatever the type of work being undertaken.
For some places of work, a uniform is essential. It will be smart, will carry the particular company’s brand name, and will be part of its identity. For others, the choice of clothing worn at work is left to the worker, but all employers expect their employees to be appropriately dressed in the correct work clothing.
Those workers who deal with the company’s customers and clients will have been made aware that they represent the company, and that those same customers and clients will expect to do business with someone who is well turned out. Office-based workers will need to ensure that they look smart. For men this generally means wearing a smart suit, collar and tie, and for women, maybe a suit or a smart dress that is suitable for the office, not something that may be more appropriate for a night club.
Of course, not everyone works in a nice clean office. Many people work in more ‘hands-on’ conditions and these workers also need to ensure that they are appropriately dressed. Truck drivers spending long hours on the road need to feel comfortable, so for them a suit and tie will be entirely unsuitable, but a smart clean t-shirt, perhaps bearing the haulage company’s logo, will be perfect.
There are areas of work where clothing is expected to be hard wearing and to withstand rough dirty conditions. For instance, a mechanic working on car engines will need to wear tough overalls; as they will naturally end up covered in grease and oil, these overalls will need to cover whatever everyday clothing is worn underneath them. Overalls are worn more for protection than for smartness, but that is what is expected for someone working in such conditions.
Most employees are well aware that they need to dress appropriately for the work they do; today, it is easy to do just that because the right clothing for the job is readily available today.
